How to Price Wedding Photography in India: A Simple Method
Updated 17 October 2026
A practical way for Indian wedding photographers to set prices: cost per shoot day, editing time, albums, overheads and profit, with a worked example.
Most wedding photographers in India set prices by looking at what other studios charge. The problem is that you do not know their costs, their team or whether they are making money. Here is a simple method to price from your own numbers, so every booking is profitable.
Step 1: Work out your cost per shoot day
List everyone who works on a shoot day and what you pay them: second photographer, cinematographer, assistant, drone operator. Add your own day, even if you are the owner. If you do not pay yourself, you are working for free.
Then add the day's direct costs: local travel, food, equipment rental, extra batteries or cards.
Step 2: Add post-production
Editing is where studios lose money without noticing. For each package, estimate:
- Hours to cull and edit photos
- Hours to edit the cinematic film and the full-length video
- Album design hours
- Freelance editor fees, if you outsource
Multiply the hours by what an editor costs you per hour. Many studios find that post-production costs as much as the shoot itself.
Step 3: Add products
Albums, prints, boxes, pen drives and delivery. Use the price your vendor charges you, plus courier.
Step 4: Share your overheads
Your monthly fixed costs (rent, software, internet, equipment loan EMIs, marketing, salaries for full-time staff) have to be covered by the weddings you shoot. Divide your monthly overhead by the number of shoot days you realistically do in a month. Add that amount to every shoot day.
Step 5: Add profit, then tax
Add a profit margin on top of all costs. 30% to 50% is a reasonable range for a growing studio; it pays for slow months, new equipment and growth. Then add GST at 18% if you are registered.
A worked example
These numbers are only an illustration. Use your own.
- Team for 2 days (3 people at Rs 8,000 a day): Rs 48,000
- Your own fee for 2 days: Rs 30,000
- Travel and food: Rs 6,000
- Post-production (editing, film, album design): Rs 45,000
- Album and delivery: Rs 18,000
- Overhead share (2 days x Rs 10,000): Rs 20,000
Total cost: Rs 1,67,000. With a 40% margin the price is about Rs 2,34,000, before GST.
If your current price for this package is Rs 1,80,000, you are not underpriced by a little. You are barely covering costs.
Price packages, not hours
Clients compare packages. Build three (for example Essential, Signature and Luxe) with clear differences in days, team size and deliverables, each priced with this method. Most couples choose the middle one.
Keep checking the numbers
Prices that worked last year may not work now. Track what each wedding actually cost you against what you charged. In StudioOps every project shows the package value, money received, crew wages and expenses, and the real profit, so you can see which packages make money.
